The Surprising Reason My Decision to End This Podcast Will Help You Become a Better Leader

Why this is the last podcast episode on The Aid for Aid Workers Leadership Podcast, and how my decision to end it will help you become a better leader.

Welcome to the Aid for Aid Workers Leadership Podcast. I'm Torrey Peace, a former aid worker, now leadership coach, whose mission is to help you achieve the impact you're seeking while empowering your team and stepping away from the hustle so you can focus on the things you love the most. Sound good?

Let's get started.

Hello, my aid worker, friend. I hope you're having a wonderful week. And today, I am going to let you know: number one: why I've decided to end this podcast, two: three things that most humanitarian and development leaders, including yourself are probably not aware of that prevent you from leading better. And number three, next steps that you can take to make a greater impact. So this is actually episode 300.

I cannot believe it. I remember when I first started this as a way to fill a gap in the podcast space. I remember searching for humanitarian leadership and finding almost nothing back in 2016, when I first started this. And now 300 episodes later, so much has changed. When I first started, I was a country manager in Dili with no clear focus for the podcast, other than sharing leadership insights and stories from other leaders.

And then that kind of evolved into more specific leadership and coaching. And that evolved as well. But what I've noticed is after six years and 300 episodes, and after coaching so many leaders and teaching them I'm noticing more and more trends that need to be addressed because they are preventing you from making a bigger impact and keeping you in overwork and overwhelm. So, what are these?

These trends include number one, the way we work that is causing more overload and burnout. Number two the impact that we want to make is not clear enough and so therefore we are not able to use our time very well. And number three, we are not leveraging our team to both help the team to become stronger, but also so that we can achieve more.

And in addition to these three things, I also see the direction of the humanitarian and international development sector is changing more and more. It accelerated since all the social justice movements, since COVID so many things have changed over the last six or seven years. And the gap that I see now is that there is no practical "how to" way of becoming a modern humanitarian and development leader who can meet and overcome all of these challenges that I've just mentioned.

And that is why I am creating one which will focus on just that in the form of a podcast that I'm launching next week, July 2nd called "The Modern Humanitarian and Development Leader." So this podcast, "The Modern Humanitarian and Development Leader" is going to focus on practical steps that you can take to start working more productively, take control of your time, create a greater impact and achieve your version of a better leader so you can step away from the overwhelm and burnout and become a modern humanitarian and development leader. And this podcast is going to be a little different from the current one, because it's going to focus only on this journey to help you become a more inclusive. Impactful leader, as well as including weekly motivational stories and quotes and occasionally lessons from my former students and others on how they succeed in making more impact without the overwhelm and the overwork. So I'm so excited to introduce this to you because I really think it's going to make such a difference.

And I already have been introducing it through my course. And I see the difference it has made: that people are working four to five less hours a week, that they're announcing how their teams are working more, taking more responsibility, becoming more proactive. And they're also clearer on where they're going as a leader.

And so they're able to make that impact that they really desire. And guess what else happens as a side effect of that? Well, you become more motivated to do this work because that's another thing that I've seen over the last few years is this loss of motivation because of the overwhelm, because we're not working as effectively as we could, because we're not utilizing our teams.

This has led to this overwhelm, overwork and that's not a great place to lead from. We need to work differently and we need to learn how to meet the changing needs of our sector. And I want to show you how with this new podcast. So I'm so excited. And if you want to join me and hundreds of others to achieve the impact that you want to make an a way that you feel great about,

then you can learn more about the launch next week by signing up for my email list. That is you can go to the link www.aidforaidworkers.com/email. I'll also include that link in the show notes. So if you're already on my email list, you're good to go because you'll receive the big announcement next week, but if you're not, I recommend that you get on it.

Even if you're listening to this in August, September, or a year from now, the best way to find out about what's going on currently is to get on the email list. And through that you will start being informed on the new podcast, actions to take around that. I have this really exciting quiz I've developed called what is your leadership style?

So you can learn more about how you lead and how it impacts those around you and how you can make an even bigger impact without the overwhelm and the overwork, which is such an issue I see that needs to be addressed. And that is why by ending this podcast, I hope to start something new, which will really serve you even better.

That is my goal. And I just wanted to say also, thank you so much for all your support over this last six years and over 300 episodes. It has been so fun and I can't wait to take this to the next level. So I hope you're going to join me once again, by going to aid for aid workers.com/email and sign up for the email list.

If you're not already on it. And we will continue this journey to level up your leadership and to step into greater impact without the overwork and overwhelm. So you can find a link once again, in the show notes. And this is it. Episode 300, the final one. I can't believe it. It's a little bittersweet. But it's been such a great journey and I can't wait to start this new one with you. So that you can become the modern humanitarian and development leader. All right. See you next week on a different podcast. Bye for now.
