The Greatest Impact You Will Make as a Humanitarian and Development Leader

What is the greatest impact that you will make as a leader? Find out in today's episode.

Welcome to The Modern Humanitarian and Development Leader podcast, the podcast helping humanitarian and development supervisors make a greater impact by taking control of your time, leading more inclusively and empowering your team all the while avoiding stress, burnout, and overwhelm. I'm your host, leadership coach and former aid worker, Torrey Peace.

Are you ready? Let's get started.

Hello, my aspiring modern humanitarian and development leader. So today's quote is by Aga Khan IV, and it is "the question is not only what have I achieved? The question is what have I helped others to achieve?" This quote to me, captures the essence of where the humanitarian and development sector is heading and also the type of leadership that we're going to need. That is the mindset of the modern humanitarian and development leader.

So, what I've observed is often we focused on the results. The results we're getting from our projects.

The outcomes and the deadlines of proposals and so on. We want to help and make an impact on the communities that we work with. That's great. But guess what? The greatest impact that you are going to make as a humanitarian and development leader is... blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Drum roll, blah, blah, blah.

Not on the community is on the people you work closest with. It's on your team. That is where you will make the most impact. And yet many of us are saying that we don't have the time to develop our team. Or that we are so focused on the busy-ness of project management it becomes something that we reserve for development plan discussions, and you know how that goes. So, what if I were to tell you that there was a way to develop your team every day, that does not require a lot of extra time? What if it had more to do with the way you are leading or your leadership style and the way that you engage your team?

The modern humanitarian and development leader understands how to lead in a way that empowers those around you to achieve more. By being this type of leader, you can help others find their own way using a coach approach leadership style that builds confidence and allows them to grow every day. Not three times a year in a development plan. Every day. This is what I teach in my digital course "Becoming The Modern Humanitarian and Development Leader". How you can lead to develop and make an impact on your team

so they become stronger and you can achieve more through them, not with them.

After all, what are you going to remember 10 years from now? That proposal that you wrote or helping a team member gain their confidence enough that they were able to be promoted? So how much time do you spend developing your team? And as Aga Khan IV quote says how much have you helped others achieve? Rather than doing it all yourself or telling others what to do.

So you may be thinking right now being a modern, humanitarian and development leader

sounds great, but the culture where I work or perhaps the personality of my team does not allow me to lead in that way. Well, if you're thinking that or along those lines, you're in luck because we will be discussing what you can do about that in next week's episode. So you can help your team succeed and become higher performers in order to make a greater impact.

All right. Until then keep evolving. Bye for now.

Are you the type of leader that tells others what to do? Or do you let them figure it out for themselves? Understanding your leadership style is the first step to deciding what's working for you and what's not. To find out your leadership style, take my free quiz "what is your leadership style"?
